Tips for Health Insurance Shopping

There is no such thing as a health insurance plan that will fit every person in North Carolina perfectly. Different people obtain different types of health insurance coverage, depending on a variety of circumstances. They often consider certain conditions such as how healthy they usually are, what their health care needs are, or where they are at financially.

This webpage contains health insurance shopping tips that most folks in North Carolina will find helpful when they are shopping for health insurance. These tips do not apply to those shopping for a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan.

Health Insurance Shopping Tips:

  • Jot down on paper a list of the medical needs you have had in recent years, noting types of procedures or surgeries you have had, and the medications and prescriptions you have taken.
  • Call your doctor’s office. If you want to keep your same doctor, you may as well start by finding out which insurance providers your doctor works with!
  • Decide what deductible range is best for you. If you expect higher medical expenses, you may be better off with a health insurance plan that has a higher monthly premium and a lower deductible. If you rarely have medical expenses, you may be better off with a health insurance plan that has a higher deductible and a lower monthly premium.
  • Remember, the goal of insurance is to protect you from financial devastation should a major-medical event ever come your way. Paying very high monthly premiums so that your doctor visit costs are low and your out of pocket maximum is low, is not smart, especially if you typically have low medical expenses throughout the year, are relatively healthy, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
